Classic in style, panneled in
wormy chestnut, warmed by fireplaces of elegant oak, invitingly fragrant
with the smell of fresh brewed coffee, and folksily decorated with dazzling
little creations of Ron Hinkle's Wet Virginia glas creations, the Colonial
Hotel-Motel lobby bespeaks a homey, welcoming atmosphere right away.
As co-owner Patty Cutright attested,
"people refer to staying at the Colonial as like going to Grandma's
house."
Most of the honored guests at
the hotel-motel, built in the early 1900s, are either repeats or referrals.
Cutright said very few clients come from the anonymous stream of trafficers
of the interstate highways, and that having a friendly familiar crew
of guests frequenting her establishment is what has made her 30 years
in the hospitality businesss the pleasure it's been.
"We just like the people
we meet in this hotel. We enjoy meeting folks and being hospitable.
Probably my best friends I've met at the hotel, becuase when you get
the parent of a college freshmean coming to stay once, and then liking
the experience and returning over and over for four years, you get to
talking and forming friendships," she said.
The Colonial makes for homey surroundings for guests, and is home itself
for Cutright and her husband and co-proprietor Dalton. "We live
here, because it's a pleasant place to be, were here 24-hours-a-day
for our guests."
The office at the Colonial is
open all the time, and the coffeepot constantly bubbling. Cutright said
she can tell clientele feel "very comfortable here. People come
sit in the lobby for a while, watch TV, drink a cup, and talk a little."
When guests aren't visiting with
each other and their friendly hosts in the lobby, they can be either
in the hotel or motel part of the building. Fourteen rooms are available
in the hotel, and there are 21 motel units and three efficiency suites
which boast either HBO and Cinemax or full cable service.
Cutright also sells whimisical
products of Candle Creations and cozy homemade Afghans in the gift shop
and a fax machine and copier is available for the convenience of guests
in town for business.
"If you enjoyed yourself,
tell a friend -- if not, tell us," is the Cutrights' motto.
